Deep Hole Gundrilling
Achieving high levels of depth in traditional drilling operations is a challenge. Gundrilling provides a specialized machining method to produce high-quality hole types that can reach multiple depths times the diameter. Using the latest modified equipment, our processes deliver straight, accurate hole types to meet project needs. Understand the fabrication capabilities for deep hole gun drilling, the benefits of the process, and the industries served.
Deep Bore Drilling Capabilities
Delivering higher quality bores, gundrilling exceeds the capabilities of traditional drilling methods. Deep hole gun drilling is a specialized machining method that is individual to the machined component, depending on factors such as the diameter and materials used. The depth capabilities of a workpiece are measured relative to the desired diameter. Using custom-modified equipment and specially formulated coolant, our deep hole gun drilling capabilities are compatible with a range of materials and produce depths unavailable in traditional drilling operations. We can provide deep bore drilling for the following:
- Up to 30 inches deep for O.D. less than 1/4 inches
- Up to 120 inches deep for O.D. from 1/4 inches to 1/2 inches
- Up to 360 inches deep for O.D. greater than 1/2 inches
- Depth of hole depends on diameter size, with capabilities up to 22 feet deep
An unlimited number of holes and various hole types can be achieved in deep hole gun drilling, with a bolt circle diameter of up to 36” and manufactured to tolerances of ± 0.0003 inches. We produce custom components with our abilities varying depending on your needs. If you have questions about the viability of your gun-drilled component, contact us.
Benefits of Deep Hole Gun Drilling
There are many advantages to choosing gundrilling for deep bores. Deep hole gun drilling produces highly accurate bores with high-tolerance straightness, making it an excellent choice for manufacturers in industries that demand precision. Along with the ability to create an unlimited number of holes in a workpiece and various hole types capabilities, deep bore drilling is a high aspect ratio drilling method that produces holes exponentially deeper than the diameter.
Higher quality products are created naturally with the specialized equipment used in gun drilling operations. Gun drilling produces smooth and uniform surface finishes, eliminating the need for further surface machining. Additionally, we use a specially formulated coolant that assists in the material removal rate for faster machining and increased productivity. Able to create complex drilled bores that your project requires from various materials, deep hole gun drilling produces repeatable, high-quality hole types for different industrial applications.
Industries & Applications for Deep Bore Drilling
Many applications across industries can benefit from precision depth drilling operations. Compatible with various material options and fabricating an array of quality hole types, gun drilling offers unique solutions for producing components. In demanding industries like aerospace and defense, medical, automotive, and oil and gas, gundrilling provides tight tolerances and high accuracy straightness. Industrial applications that can be achieved with deep bore drilling include:
